NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK — More than 1,100 people have signed a petition asking organizers to exclude Mayor Zohran Mamdani from the 25th anniversary commemoration of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Organizers claim that at least 300 signers are relatives of victims. The petition states that Mamdani should not attend due to his public statements and his associations with individuals whose remarks about terrorism or the attacks have caused controversy.
Giovanni Galante, whose wife Grace Catherine Galante died on 9/11, said the appeal is about Mamdani’s record, not partisan politics. Other organizers pointed to his connection with commentator Hasan Piker and his earlier decision not to condemn the phrase ‘globalize the intifada.’
Mamdani has said the phrase carries different meanings for different people and has rejected antisemitism and political violence. His spokesperson said the mayor still plans to attend and honor victims, survivors and first responders.
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum has not indicated that it will change its policy. Spokesperson Julie Wood said sitting presidents, governors and mayors traditionally attend only as witnesses, remain in a designated area and do not deliver remarks.
The private ceremony will include relatives reading the names of those killed in the 2001 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
