INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported former Indianapolis Colts linebacker Daniel Adongo to Kenya after an immigration judge ordered his removal, federal officials confirmed.
ICE said Adongo was removed June 20 after overstaying his visa in 2016. A Justice Department immigration judge issued the removal order in March.
Adongo, 37, was held without bond following a 2020 criminal mischief conviction that resulted in a 364-day jail sentence. ICE stated that his detention was mandated by the Laken Riley Act, but did not explain how his conviction met the law’s eligibility requirements.
An ICE official described Adongo as dangerous based on his criminal record. However, court records reviewed by USA Today indicate that judges twice found him incompetent to stand trial. A psychologist reported acute psychosis and raised the possibility that Adongo had experienced a brain injury.
Adongo, a former rugby player from Kenya, signed with the Colts in 2013 despite having no previous American football experience. He appeared in five NFL games and earned approximately $694,000 before the team released him in 2015 following a reported domestic disturbance.
After leaving football, Adongo faced a series of arrests, legal issues, and psychiatric hospitalizations over the next several years.
