WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump ordered federal officials Friday to install signs outside the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History telling visitors that some exhibits contain inaccurate or ideologically driven interpretations.
The executive order directs the Interior Department, National Park Service and other agencies to place signs along federally maintained sidewalks leading to the museum. Visitors would be directed to a July 4 White House report and other materials presenting what the administration considers more accurate information about American history. The order also seeks a temporary exhibit addressing alleged errors and the museum’s treatment of the Declaration of Independence’s 250th anniversary.
The Smithsonian operates independently of the executive branch, limiting Trump’s direct authority over its leadership and permanent exhibits. Museum directors answer to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch and its Board of Regents.
Museum Director Anthea Hartig disputed the administration’s report during congressional testimony, saying it did not fairly characterize the museum’s broader work. She said the institution celebrates American achievements while documenting times when the country failed to meet its founding principles.
The American Historical Association warned that political interference could undermine scholarly accuracy and public trust. Smithsonian officials did not immediately comment on the new order.
