Beijing, China — President Donald Trump blamed former President Joe Biden for perceptions of American decline after Chinese President Xi Jinping referenced concerns about shifting global power dynamics during a high-profile summit in Beijing.
In a Truth Social post late Thursday, Trump argued Xi’s remarks about the United States potentially being a “declining nation” were aimed at what Trump described as damage caused during the Biden administration. Trump pointed to issues including immigration, inflation, crime, trade policies, and diversity initiatives as examples of national decline under his predecessor.
“When President Xi very elegantly referred to the United States as perhaps being a declining nation,” Trump wrote, “he was referring to the tremendous damage we suffered during the four years of Sleepy Joe Biden.”
Trump also claimed the United States had rebounded economically and militarily during his current term, calling America “the hottest Nation anywhere in the world.”
Xi’s comments appeared connected to references to the “Thucydides trap,” a geopolitical theory suggesting conflict can emerge when a rising global power challenges an established one. Chinese leaders have previously promoted the idea that “the East is rising and the West is declining,” often interpreted as a comparison between China and the United States.
The summit between Trump and Xi focused heavily on trade, Iran, energy security, and tensions surrounding Taiwan. Chinese officials warned that mishandling the Taiwan issue could seriously damage relations between Washington and Beijing.
