Covington, Kentucky: Voters delivered a sharp rebuke to Rep. Thomas Massie on Tuesday, choosing Trump-backed challenger Ed Gallrein in the Republican primary for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District.
Massie, a seven-term incumbent known for libertarian views and frequent breaks with President Donald Trump, conceded after one of the most expensive House primaries on record. The race became a test of whether a Republican who opposed Trump on spending, foreign policy, and the release of Jeffrey Epstein files could survive in a strongly conservative district.
Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL and farmer, campaigned as a loyal supporter of Trump’s agenda. Trump personally targeted Massie, calling him disloyal and backing outside efforts to defeat him. Conservative and pro-Israel groups also spent heavily on Gallrein.
Massie blamed the loss on Washington money, telling supporters, “They decided to buy the seat.” Despite the defeat, he did not rule out a comeback. Supporters chanted “2028,” including calls for a possible presidential run, prompting Massie to respond, “We’ll talk about it later.”
Gallrein now becomes the heavy favorite in November in a district that has not elected a Democrat in two decades. Massie will remain in Congress for the rest of his term.
