Jackson, Mississippi — Police have arrested a 51-year-old man in connection with the death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old mother of four who was found hanging from a tree behind a vacant home last month.
Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney-Wheelock said officers arrested Jacques Ratliff after the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office formally ruled Fortune’s death a homicide. Police had already secured search and arrest warrants but waited for the medical examiner’s determination before executing them.
Fortune’s death drew national attention because of the circumstances and Mississippi’s history of racial terror and lynchings. Brackney said investigators understand those concerns but cautioned against speculating about a motive before evidence supports one. Police said Ratliff knew Fortune, but they have not disclosed the nature of their relationship or why they believe he was involved.
Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, said she was relieved to learn of the arrest but still has many unanswered questions. She previously said she believed her daughter had been killed but did not think the death was racially motivated.
Police said the investigation remains active and additional arrests are possible. Authorities have not publicly released a detailed cause of death or alleged motive.
