Washington, D.C. – Republican opposition to President Donald Trump’s Iran memorandum of understanding grew Wednesday as Sens. Ted Cruz and Bill Cassidy criticized proposed concessions tied to sanctions relief, oil exports, and a $300 billion reconstruction fund.
Cruz told The Hill that “giving billions of dollars to theocratic lunatics who want to murder us is not a good idea,” adding that he believes Trump is receiving “very poor advice” on the deal. Cassidy separately called the agreement a “tremendous foreign policy blunder” and argued that Iran could emerge stronger while U.S. allies in the region become weaker.
The criticism followed release of a 14-point MOU intended to end the U.S.-Iran war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and create a 60-day window for broader nuclear negotiations. Reuters reported that the agreement includes phased sanctions relief, safe passage for commercial shipping, and a reconstruction fund tied to Iran’s compliance.
Trump has said the U.S. will not directly pay into the fund. Reuters reported the $300 billion fund is described by officials as private-sector financed, not taxpayer-funded.
Cassidy said Congress should receive a full briefing before the agreement advances. Cruz warned against giving Iran financial benefits without stronger limits on its nuclear program.
