WASHINGTON, D.C. — Republican voters remain broadly positive about President Donald Trump’s remaining two years, but relatively few describe themselves as enthusiastic, according to a new CNN/SSRS poll released months before the midterm elections.
The survey found that 19% of self-identified Republicans were enthusiastic about the rest of Trump’s second term, while 58% were optimistic. Combined, 77% expressed a positive outlook. Thirteen percent said they were pessimistic, and 11% reported feeling afraid.
The national results were considerably more negative. Among all U.S. adults, 67% said they felt either afraid or pessimistic about the country’s future under Trump, compared with 33% who were enthusiastic or optimistic.
The poll also found that 62% did not consider Trump an effective world leader. Seventy-three percent said he was out of touch with the problems ordinary Americans face, and the same percentage said he was not focused on the country’s most important issues.
The findings come as the continuing war with Iran and elevated gasoline prices create political risks for Republicans heading into November. Other recent polling has also found declining support for Trump’s handling of Iran and the economy.
CNN and SSRS surveyed 1,225 adults from July 23 through July 27. The poll had a margin of sampling error of 3.2 percentage points.
