TUCSON, Arizona — Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos is publicly challenging FBI Director Kash Patel’s account of the Nancy Guthrie investigation, warning that inaccurate statements from federal officials could damage the search for answers.
During an interview with NewsNation, Nanos said Patel received incorrect information early in the case and was “misinformed” when he claimed local investigators delayed involving the FBI. Nanos said he has never met or spoken directly with Patel and maintained that the same investigative team has worked together since Guthrie disappeared.
Patel previously criticized the sheriff’s department’s initial handling of evidence and alleged that federal authorities were denied timely access during the opening days of the investigation. Reuters reported in February that friction had emerged between the agencies over evidence access, although Nanos now disputes Patel’s broader characterization.
Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” host Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing Feb. 1 from her home outside Tucson. Authorities found her blood near the entrance and later released surveillance footage showing a masked person near the property. Investigators continue treating the disappearance as a kidnapping-for-ransom case.
Nanos said investigators are using familial genealogy and still have no proof that Guthrie is dead. The family is offering a $1 million reward for information providing answers.
