Clarksville, TN — President Donald Trump told supporters Saturday that he expects to be blamed if Republicans lose control of Congress, while again promising $5,000 payments to every U.S. adult citizen if the GOP keeps both chambers.
“If we don’t win the midterms, they’re going to blame me,” Trump said during a rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, adding that he was working aggressively to turn out Republican voters.
Trump repeated his proposed “Trump dividend,” saying every adult citizen would receive $5,000 after a Republican victory. The proposal would cost roughly $1.2 trillion to $1.3 trillion, depending on eligibility, and would require congressional authorization. Trump has said tariff revenue would help finance the payments, but no detailed legislative plan has been released.
Independent budget analysts have questioned whether tariff collections could come close to covering the cost. Current tariff revenue is far below the amount required for nationwide $5,000 checks.
Trump also warned that a Democratic victory would produce severe economic consequences, while touting income gains and poverty reductions under his administration.
The rally was part of a broader push to energize Republican voters ahead of the Nov. 3 elections. Trump acknowledged that the results will likely be viewed as a referendum on his presidency, saying he expects responsibility if Republicans fall short.
