Washington, DC — President Donald Trump announced a deal Friday to purchase large quantities of Russian diesel, reversing years of U.S. efforts to restrict Moscow’s energy revenue over its war in Ukraine.

Trump said Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 metric tons of diesel, followed by 500,000 tons in November, another 1 million tons afterward and eventually an additional 3 million tons. The agreement comes as U.S. diesel prices remain above $6 per gallon and less than a month before the midterm elections.

The move is particularly notable because Trump signed legislation last month expanding sanctions intended to restrict Russian energy income. Shortly after Friday’s announcement, the Treasury Department issued a six-month license easing sanctions on Russian diesel shipments.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized the agreement, arguing that additional energy revenue could help Moscow continue financing its invasion of Ukraine. Trump said lowering fuel costs for American farmers, truckers and consumers was his priority.

The deal follows supply disruptions linked to the Iran war and Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries. Analysts cautioned that simply redirecting Russian diesel from existing customers to the United States may have limited impact on global prices.

The White House has not disclosed payment terms or clarified when the first Russian shipments will reach U.S. markets.
