Boise, ID — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has contributed $1 million to a political action committee seeking to defeat Idaho’s Proposition 1, a November ballot measure that would expand reproductive rights and repeal the state’s current abortion restrictions.
The donation went to the Too Extreme for Idaho PAC and is the largest reported contribution from a church-affiliated organization in the campaign. The LDS Church said it remains neutral toward candidates but participates in ballot campaigns involving what it considers significant moral issues.
Proposition 1 would repeal Idaho’s existing abortion laws, establish protections for reproductive healthcare decisions and provide liability protections for providers offering abortion and related services.
The church had already announced its opposition in September and encouraged members to oppose the measure. Its abortion policy generally opposes elective abortion while allowing possible exceptions involving rape, incest, serious threats to a pregnant woman’s health or fatal fetal abnormalities.
Religious organizations are active on both sides. Catholic groups have contributed to the opposition campaign, while the Boise Unitarian Universalist Fellowship donated $5,000 to the pro-Proposition 1 PAC.
Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador previously concluded that churches may legally contribute to ballot campaigns without disclosing their individual donors under certain conditions.
