Clarksville, TN — President Donald Trump said Saturday that he wants to rename either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean before leaving office, floating “Trump Ocean” and “Ocean of the Americas” as possibilities.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, Trump linked the idea to previous geographic name changes ordered by his administration.
“We need a river and we need an ocean,” Trump told the crowd before suggesting that either the Atlantic or Pacific could receive a new name. He did not announce a formal proposal or specify which ocean he preferred.
Trump also said he would like a major river renamed but ruled out changing the Hudson River, praising explorer Henry Hudson, and said he would leave the Mississippi River untouched.
The remarks follow Trump’s 2025 order directing federal agencies to use “Gulf of America” instead of Gulf of Mexico. In August, he also ordered federal agencies to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”
Those actions determine terminology used by the U.S. federal government but do not compel other countries or international geographic organizations to adopt the names.
Trump additionally floated calling the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait.” No formal executive action involving the oceans, a river or the strait had been announced as of Saturday.
