Jerusalem, Israel — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told President Donald Trump that Israel must retain the ability to act militarily against threats in the region as the United States continues negotiations tied to a possible agreement with Iran, according to an Israeli source familiar with the discussion.
The conversation took place Saturday as Washington and Tehran reportedly moved closer toward a broader agreement involving regional security and maritime access in the Persian Gulf. Trump later described his call with Netanyahu as having gone “very well” in a Truth Social post.
According to Reuters, the developing framework reportedly includes discussions surrounding Iran’s nuclear program, the future handling of enriched uranium stockpiles, and commitments aimed at reducing the risk of direct military escalation between the United States and Iran.
Netanyahu reportedly emphasized that Israel must maintain operational freedom to respond to threats, particularly involving Hezbollah and militant activity in Lebanon. Trump was said to support Israel’s position during the conversation.
The ongoing diplomacy has generated political debate inside Israel. Opposition figure Benny Gantz reportedly warned that accepting a ceasefire arrangement without stronger guarantees could become a long-term strategic mistake for Israeli security.
Trump said final details of the proposed agreement are still being negotiated and suggested an official announcement could come soon if talks continue progressing.
