New York, New York — Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Thursday that she “hates” the governments and policies of President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu while emphasizing that her criticism does not extend to the United States or Israel.
“I love Israel, and I hate Netanyahu’s government and his policies. I love America, and I hate Trump’s government and policies,” Clinton said during an appearance on MS NOW’s “Morning Joe.” She argued that both governments are pursuing policies she believes are damaging to their respective countries.
Clinton also addressed a new Haaretz report alleging that UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed warned Netanyahu roughly 10 days before Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was planning a major operation. Haaretz reported that Netanyahu did not relay the warning to senior Israeli security officials.
Netanyahu has categorically denied that the call or warning occurred, calling the report false and politically motivated. He has instructed his lawyers to pursue a defamation lawsuit against Haaretz and the journalists behind the report.
Clinton went further than the underlying reporting, speculating that Netanyahu either dismissed the warning or possibly wanted to see what Hamas would do before responding. She acknowledged that she did not know his thinking and called the episode, if accurately reported, a “failure of leadership.”
With Israel holding national elections Oct. 27, Clinton said the United States should take a tougher approach if Netanyahu remains in power, while suggesting a different Israeli government could create an opening for a new U.S.-Israel strategy.
