The Republican National Committee (RNC) has appointed Michael Whatley as its new chair and Lara Trump as the co-chair during their leadership meetings in Houston. This decision follows the resignation of former chair Ronna McDaniel amidst disagreements with former President Donald Trump during the primary process. Michael Whatley, known for his loyalty to Trump and his focus on “election integrity,” aims to prioritize voter mobilization and ballot protection. He has previously emphasized the recruitment of legal teams and poll watchers to safeguard elections.

Lara Trump, tasked with enhancing the RNC’s fundraising efforts, highlighted the receipt of a $100,000 donation and the necessity of encouraging early voting among Republicans. The RNC, facing a financial shortfall compared to the Democrats, sees fundraising as crucial for the upcoming general election.

Donald Trump’s influence over the RNC is evident as he navigates through the GOP primary, winning the majority of contests. His potential nomination would allow for joint fundraising and resource sharing between his campaign and the RNC. However, the question of the RNC covering Trump’s legal expenses remains contentious. Despite millions spent on legal fees by Trump’s campaign, RNC officials, including Chris LaCivita, assert that party funds have not been and will not be allocated for these costs. A proposed resolution to formally prevent RNC funds from being used for Trump’s legal bills did not pass.
