Washington, D.C. — Nearly 200 activists aligned with Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Make America Healthy Again movement are urging President Donald Trump to reconsider plans encouraging coal-fired power for the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence industry.

In a letter sent Friday, the activists said they support maintaining U.S. leadership in AI but argued that growing electricity demand from data centers should not increase exposure to mercury, soot and other pollutants associated with coal generation. The group asked the administration to consider alternatives including solar and geothermal power.

The letter also calls for transparent reviews of where data centers are built, how they obtain electricity and whether projects comply with existing environmental reviews.

Signatories include Moms Across America founder Zen Honeycutt and Charles Eisenstein, both former members of Kennedy’s 2024 presidential campaign. Their opposition represents another disagreement between parts of the MAHA coalition and the administration over environmental policy.

Trump has promoted what he calls “big, beautiful coal” as one option for supplying electricity to energy-intensive data centers, arguing that expanding AI infrastructure is essential for competing with China.

The White House defended Trump’s broader energy record while activists said their concerns center on public-health effects in communities hosting power generation and data centers.
