DUBAI, UAEIran has intensified military activity in the Strait of Hormuz, firing on multiple vessels and seizing at least two ships, according to international and regional reports.

The attacks were carried out by Iran’s paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which opened fire on ships transiting the strategic waterway. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center reported that at least one vessel sustained significant damage, though no crew injuries were reported.

Iranian state media confirmed that two ships were taken into custody, marking a further escalation in tensions tied to the ongoing conflict with the United States. The incident comes as Donald Trump extended a ceasefire deadline to allow additional time for negotiations, while maintaining a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global shipping route, handling roughly 20% of the world’s oil and natural gas. Disruptions in the region have already contributed to rising energy prices, with oil markets reacting sharply to the continued instability.

The attacks complicate planned diplomatic efforts, including scheduled talks in Islamabad aimed at de-escalating the conflict. Military officials from multiple nations are also preparing contingency discussions on maintaining access to the strait.
