SEATTLE, WASHINGTON — Three people were killed and four others injured after gunfire erupted Sunday evening during the annual Bite of Seattle food festival at Seattle Center.
Police said the shooting occurred around 6 p.m. near the event grounds beneath the Space Needle. Investigators believe two people exchanged gunfire rather than deliberately targeting festival attendees.
Officers assigned to the festival responded immediately and confronted one suspected shooter, who surrendered at the scene. Authorities recovered two firearms but were still searching Monday morning for a second suspect who fled. Police had not released a description but said there was no continuing threat to the public.
Seven people were struck. Two victims died at the scene, while a third died after being transported to Harborview Medical Center. The four survivors included a 2-year-old boy and three adults. Authorities said the injured victims were hospitalized in stable condition.
Mayor Katie Wilson called the shooting a horrific act of violence and expressed support for the victims, their families and festival attendees.
Seattle police are investigating with assistance from the FBI, Washington State Patrol and other agencies. Officials asked witnesses to provide video or information through the department’s tip line.
