According to the U.S. Navy, there was an attempted seizure of two oil tankers by Iran near the Strait of Hormuz.

Shots were fired at one of the tankers, but both Iranian naval vessels withdrew after the U.S. Navy responded to distress signals.

The commercial ships were able to continue on their voyages safely. Iran has been reported to have seized at least five commercial vessels and harassed several others in the past two years. Most of these incidents have taken place in and around the Strait of Hormuz, which is a crucial route for crude oil transportation.

About 20% of the world’s crude oil passes through this area.
