NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK — Immigration and Customs Enforcement launched targeted operations in New York City on Monday and plans to expand them to Long Island, according to reporting from NewsNation.
The enforcement effort began in Queens and is expected to move into communities on Long Island on Tuesday. ICE sources said agents are targeting immigrants who were previously subject to federal detainer requests that local authorities declined to honor.
Detainers ask state or local law enforcement agencies to notify ICE before releasing a person and, in some cases, hold that individual temporarily beyond the scheduled release time. New York City’s sanctuary policies generally limit cooperation unless specific legal requirements are met.
Democratic Mayor Zohran Mamdani has repeatedly criticized President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown and called for ICE to be abolished following the fatal shooting of a Mexican immigrant by federal agents in Houston.
ICE has defended targeted operations as necessary to arrest people it considers public-safety threats or immigration fugitives. During an earlier June operation, the agency said its New York City officers arrested people convicted of offenses including murder and child sexual abuse.
The agency had not publicly announced how many officers were participating, how many arrests were planned or how long the latest operation would continue. Mamdani’s office had not responded to a request for comment.
