Chicago, Illinois — The Department of Justice is reportedly investigating writer E. Jean Carroll over allegations she may have provided false testimony during a 2022 deposition connected to her lawsuits against President Donald Trump.

According to reports, investigators are examining whether Carroll committed perjury when she testified that no outside party was paying her legal fees in cases accusing Trump of sexual assault and defamation. Trump has denied Carroll’s allegations, and the legal battles between the two have continued for years through multiple appeals.

The investigation reportedly stems from records released in 2023 showing that billionaire LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman helped financially support Carroll’s legal efforts through a nonprofit organization. During a 2022 deposition, Trump attorney Alina Habba asked Carroll whether anyone else was paying her legal fees. Carroll answered “No.”

After Hoffman’s financial support became public, Habba accused Carroll and her attorneys of concealing the funding arrangement and argued in court filings that Carroll had “apparently perjured herself.”

Carroll’s attorneys responded that she later recalled additional information regarding the funding and maintained that the lawsuits themselves remained contingency-fee cases. An appeals court later stated Carroll had plausibly forgotten about the limited outside funding when first questioned during the deposition.

CBS News reported that the inquiry is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois. Representatives for Carroll have not publicly commented on the reported investigation.

Meanwhile, Trump continues appealing jury verdicts that ordered him to pay Carroll millions of dollars in damages tied to findings of sexual assault and defamation liability.
