WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Senate unanimously approved a resolution opposing any presidential pardon or other clemency for Ghislaine Maxwell, sending a rare bipartisan warning to President Donald Trump regarding Jeffrey Epstein’s convicted accomplice.
Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., secured passage Wednesday through unanimous consent, meaning no senator objected. The nonbinding resolution declares that pardoning, commuting the sentence of or otherwise granting clemency to Maxwell would deny justice to survivors of Epstein’s sexual abuse.
Maxwell is serving a 20-year federal prison sentence after being convicted of helping Epstein recruit and sexually abuse underage girls. Her attorney has previously indicated that Maxwell would provide information to congressional investigators if Trump granted her clemency. Trump has said he has not considered a pardon but has repeatedly declined to rule one out.
The vote came as the Senate Judiciary Committee considered acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s stalled nomination to permanently lead the Justice Department. Blanche personally interviewed Maxwell during the department’s Epstein investigation and later said he would not recommend that Trump pardon her.
Rosen said granting special treatment to a convicted sex trafficker would be indefensible. Although the resolution cannot prevent Trump from exercising his constitutional pardon authority, it puts every senator on record against clemency for Maxwell.
