WASHINGTON, D.C. — Support for U.S. military aid to Israel is increasingly dividing Democrats in Congress, with some lawmakers now opposing funding that once had broad bipartisan backing.

Several Democratic representatives told Axios they can no longer support additional aid to Israel, including funding for the Iron Dome missile defense system. Rep. Jim McGovern said he previously backed such funding but now cites a lack of accountability from Israeli leadership. Others, including Reps. Jared Huffman and Mark Pocan, argued that Israel no longer needs U.S. financial support for its military operations.

The shift marks a notable change from 2021, when Iron Dome funding passed with overwhelming bipartisan support and only a small number of Democrats opposed it. Since then, progressive voices have grown more critical, with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stating she would not support funding for Israel, including defensive systems.

Lawmakers pointed to changing public opinion and recent geopolitical developments, including tensions involving Iran, as key drivers behind the shift. Rep. Ro Khanna described the pace of opinion change on Israel as unusually rapid, even within Congress.

However, divisions remain within the party. Some Democrats, including Rep. Jerry Nadler and Rep. Brad Schneider, continue to support military aid, emphasizing Israel’s role in U.S. national security interests.

The issue is expected to influence upcoming Democratic primaries, where candidates face increasing pressure from voters and advocacy groups on both sides of the debate.
