Washington, D.C. — Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previewed a new $100 bill bearing President Donald Trump’s signature as the administration prepares to issue redesigned U.S. currency for the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Bessent shared an image of the bill after Trump posted it on Truth Social. The note includes both Trump’s signature and Bessent’s, making it the first time a sitting president’s signature is set to appear on U.S. paper currency.
Federal law bars living people from being depicted on U.S. currency, but Treasury has argued that Trump’s signature is legally distinct from a portrait. The administration has also cited semiquincentennial redesign authority as it pursues other Trump-branded commemorative items, including a proposed gold coin and limited-edition federal passes.
Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Jeff Merkley questioned the move in an April letter, asking how adding Trump’s name to money addresses public needs. Supporters inside the administration say the redesign honors the anniversary and Trump’s economic agenda.
An April Economist/YouGov poll found 59% of Americans disapproved of adding Trump’s name to currency, while 24% approved and 18% were undecided.
