Brooklyn, New York — Eight people, including four children, were shot late Friday in Coney Island after July Fourth celebrations, according to the New York Police Department.
Police said officers responded around 10:37 p.m. to reports of gunfire near West 31st Street and Surf Avenue. The victims ranged in age from 6 to 37 and included two men, two women, and four children ages 6, 7, 12, and 14.
NBC News reported that a 21-year-old woman was critically injured after being shot in the chest. The other seven victims were listed in stable condition. The children suffered injuries to the stomach, legs, or thigh, according to local reports.
Police recovered a firearm at the scene, but no arrests had been announced as of Saturday. Investigators were still working to identify suspects and determine what led to the shooting.
The attack came during a busy holiday night in Coney Island, where crowds had gathered for fireworks and Independence Day events. The shooting adds to concerns about public safety during large summer gatherings, especially when children are caught in gunfire.
