Washington, D.C. — An active-duty Air Force major was arrested Wednesday on the U.S. Capitol steps after calling for the impeachment and removal of President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
Maj. Jason Watson was initially accompanied by Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, while speaking on Capitol grounds. Capitol Police told The Hill that peaceful demonstrations are allowed in some areas, but people speaking from the steps must remain with a member of Congress. After Green left, officers directed Watson to leave the steps. He was arrested on a charge of crowding, obstructing, or incommoding.
Watson accused Trump of violating Congress’s war powers through military actions involving Venezuela, Cuba, and Iran. He also criticized the administration’s immigration enforcement, deportation policies, and Department of Government Efficiency actions.
Reuters reported Friday that the Air Force will investigate Watson’s conduct. Military officials said service members must remain nonpartisan, especially while in uniform. Officers can face discipline under the Uniform Code of Military Justice for certain political activity or contemptuous remarks toward senior officials.
Watson’s supporters praised the protest as a constitutional stand. Critics say active-duty military officers must not use their rank or uniform in partisan political disputes.
