Gilbert, Arizona — An 18-month-old Arizona boy was found alive in a hospital morgue hours after a doctor pronounced him dead following a backyard pool incident, according to police records reported by local media.
The child was taken to Dignity Health Mercy Gilbert Medical Center on Feb. 8 after being found in his family’s pool. ABC15 Arizona reported that a newly released Gilbert police report and body-camera footage show officers and nurses noticed possible signs of life before the child was sent to the hospital’s cold room.
According to the report cited by ABC15, officers heard a nurse say she had found a pulse, and one officer wrote that the child appeared to gasp for air. The doctor allegedly dismissed concerns and pronounced the toddler dead at 6:20 p.m.
Hours later, a medical examiner discovered the child was alive. He was transferred for additional treatment and survived, though reports say he suffered brain damage from the near-drowning.
Mercy Gilbert Medical Center called the case heartbreaking and said it conducted a full review to identify what happened and strengthen patient care. AZFamily reported that the doctor is not currently facing criminal charges.
