Washington, DC – Rep. Thomas Massie said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth broke federal law by keeping military operations against Iran going without Congress signing off.
Massie said the administration went past what the War Powers Resolution allows for unauthorized military action. That law says the president has to stop hostilities after 60 days unless Congress gives approval, with another 30 days to pull troops out.
Massie raised these points after reports that four service members killed after Trump announced a ceasefire in April were left out of the Pentagon’s online count of Iran casualties. He said officials were calling the renewed fighting a new conflict just to reset the legal clock.
Pentagon acting press secretary Joel Valdez disagreed, saying the missing names were due to data problems and website mistakes that would be fixed. The administration still says the president has the constitutional power to keep the operation going.
The House voted 214-208 to tell Trump to stop unauthorized hostilities. Massie and three other Republicans—Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett, and Warren Davidson—voted for it. This resolution does not have the force of law. The Senate tried to pass a binding measure, but it failed 47-49. Susan Collins, a Republican, supported it, while Democrat John Fetterman voted no.
