Washington, DC – House Democrats are urging their campaign committee to rethink its involvement in party primaries, especially after voters rejected three candidates backed by national leadership.
In Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, former state Rep. Amish Shah defeated Marlene Galán-Woods, even though the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spent over $500,000 supporting Galán-Woods. Despite this investment, Shah won the primary.
DCCC-supported candidates also lost to Matt Dunlap in Maine and Randy Villegas in California. The committee has been involved in 10 contested primaries this year, winning seven. Still, some argue that limited resources would be better spent on defeating Republicans in November rather than intervening in primaries.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pointed out that national officials need to pay more attention to local communities instead of assuming a single candidate profile fits every district. Some lawmakers have suggested forming a panel with representatives from different Democratic factions to provide input to the DCCC.
Leaders from the Progressive Caucus criticized the committee for not informing them before supporting California Assemblymember Jasmeet Bains over Villegas, who had the backing of their political action committee.
The DCCC defended its endorsement process, saying it relies on polling, general election research, and input from local leaders, unions, and members of Congress. Shah will face Republican Jay Feely in November for the open Arizona seat.
