WASHINGTON, D.C. — Nearly two-thirds of Americans expressed negative views of President Donald Trump’s major construction projects in Washington, according to a Washington Post-Ipsos survey released Thursday.
The poll found that 65% of adults reported dissatisfaction or concern regarding the planned White House ballroom, the renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, and the proposed 250-foot triumphal arch. Thirty-two percent indicated satisfaction or enthusiasm, with 12% describing themselves as enthusiastic.
Opposition was highest among Democrats, while a majority of independent voters also expressed disapproval, with 73% holding negative views. Republicans were more likely to support the projects, though 31% reported dissatisfaction. Twenty-six percent of respondents said they believed Trump’s primary goal was to make Washington more attractive, while 51% attributed a different motivation.
The projects have led to legal challenges, limited access to federal landmarks, and prompted questions regarding cost and congressional oversight. The completed Reflecting Pool renovation cost approximately $15 million. A contractor estimated the ballroom at $600 million, with more than half of the funding potentially coming from taxpayers. Trump has stated that private donations will fund the general construction of the ballroom.
The survey included more than 2,600 U.S. adults and was conducted in July.
