St. Paul, Minnesota – Ramsey County officials said six murder convictions tied to former medical examiner Dr. Michael McGee remain “fair and just” after an outside review of his testimony and conclusions.
The review began after a federal judge criticized McGee’s testimony in the 2003 murder case of Alfonso Rodriguez Jr., who was convicted of killing North Dakota college student Dru Sjodin. The judge called parts of McGee’s testimony “unreliable, misleading and inaccurate,” prompting Ramsey County Attorney John Choi to review hundreds of cases.
Independent experts from the Great North Innocence Project and the Prosecutors Center for Excellence helped examine the cases. AP reported that the review cost about $380,000 and narrowed more than 200 cases to seven requiring closer scrutiny.
Choi said experts found concerns with some of McGee’s language and testimony, but those issues did not affect the key evidence supporting six convictions. One remaining case involving a plea agreement is still moving through the legal process.
The county attorney’s office said it will provide additional training for prosecutors on medical expert testimony.
