New York, NY — A federal immigration agent shot and wounded a man Thursday afternoon in the Marble Hill section of the Bronx while a 5-year-old child was reportedly inside the vehicle.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said early reports indicated federal agents surrounded the man’s vehicle before multiple shots were fired. The child was physically unharmed, while the wounded man remained conscious and was taken to a hospital.
The NYPD said its officers were not present when the shooting occurred. Video from the scene showed several federal agents in the roadway and visible bullet holes in the windshield of a silver SUV.
Mamdani called the incident “unconscionable” and said he planned to demand that President Donald Trump end ICE enforcement operations in the city. Gov. Kathy Hochul separately called for a “full and transparent accounting” of what happened.
The Department of Homeland Security later alleged that the 28-year-old man was an undocumented immigrant from the Dominican Republic with gang ties and prior criminal cases. Those assertions had not been independently substantiated in the immediate aftermath.
The shooting comes amid growing scrutiny of federal immigration agents’ use of firearms during enforcement operations under the Trump administration.
