Minneapolis, MN — President Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric toward Minnesota’s Somali community Thursday, telling residents to “fight back” while broadly linking Somali immigrants to “Violence, Murder, and Mayhem.”

Trump claimed on Truth Social that Minnesota was being “taken over” and told Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey to request federal assistance, promising the government would “come to your rescue.”

The remarks followed several high-profile criminal cases involving individual Somali Americans, including fraud prosecutions, gang-related violence and an alleged Mall of America terrorist plot. Trump, however, extended his criticism to an entire ethnic community rather than limiting it to those accused of crimes.

That distinction is significant: most Somali Minnesotans are U.S. citizens, and roughly 40% were born in the United States.

Walz responded by telling Somali residents they are valued and belong in Minnesota. The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations went further, describing Trump’s statement as “blatant racism” and an implicit invitation to violence against the community.

Trump has repeatedly singled out Somali Americans. In December, he called Somalis “garbage” and said they should return to where they came from.

His latest language comes after thousands of federal immigration agents were previously deployed to Minnesota as part of the administration’s immigration crackdown.
