WINDER, Georgia — A Georgia jury has convicted a father who gave his teenage son the gun used in the 2024 Apalachee High School shooting, marking another case in which parents have been held criminally responsible for a child’s mass violence.
Jurors found Colin Gray guilty of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie. The September 2024 shooting in Winder, northeast of Atlanta, also left another teacher and eight students wounded.
Prosecutors argued that Gray gave the firearm to his son as a Christmas gift and allowed access despite warning signs about the teen’s deteriorating mental health and fixation on school shooters. District Attorney Brad Smith said there were “multiple warnings over a lengthy period of time” and that removing the rifle could have prevented the tragedy.
Gray showed little emotion as the verdict was read. He faces 10 to 30 years in prison for second-degree murder and up to 10 years for involuntary manslaughter. Sentencing will occur at a later date.
The case follows similar prosecutions, including the convictions of Jennifer and James Crumbley in Michigan.
