WASHINGTON, D.C. — As U.S.-Iran tensions remain high, Donald Trump publicly urged Iranian leaders to release eight women reportedly facing execution ahead of upcoming negotiations.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump framed the request as a goodwill gesture before talks resume, asking Iranian officials to “do them no harm” and suggesting the move could help set a positive tone. The appeal marked a notably softer tone compared to his past rhetoric toward Iran.
The request comes as U.S. and Iranian negotiators prepare for another round of discussions in Islamabad, Pakistan, with a temporary ceasefire nearing expiration. The two sides remain divided on key issues, with little indication of a breakthrough.
Trump has previously claimed influence over Iran’s handling of executions, stating earlier this year that his warnings helped prevent hundreds of deaths. Iranian officials have denied those assertions, maintaining that their judiciary operates independently and rejecting claims of halted mass executions.
Relations between the two countries deteriorated sharply following protests in Iran and a subsequent government crackdown, which prompted increased U.S. military activity in the region.
The outcome of the upcoming negotiations could determine whether the ceasefire holds or tensions escalate further.
