Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump’s staff reportedly persuaded him to soften parts of his Thursday primetime speech on election integrity after critics warned he might repeat false claims about “stolen” elections.
White House officials urged Trump to keep the address more restrained. One official told Politico that the senior team wanted the president to be taken seriously and advised against more extreme claims.
In the speech, Trump cited declassified intelligence documents and alleged that China meddled in the 2020 election by accessing voter data and that U.S. intelligence officials downplayed the threat. The White House later promoted the address as evidence of foreign interference and “deep state suppression.”
However, AP reported that Trump did not provide evidence that China or any other foreign entity manipulated votes or changed the 2020 outcome.
The Wall Street Journal similarly reported that Trump offered no proof of illegal voting or altered results, and noted that a 2021 U.S. intelligence assessment found no indication China tried to alter voter registration, ballots, vote counting, or reporting.
Major networks did not carry the speech live on cable, instead distributing coverage through digital platforms.
