Washington, D.C. — Nearly two-thirds of Americans say it is inappropriate for President Donald Trump and his family to profit from cryptocurrency while he serves in the White House, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.
The survey found 63% considered the Trump family’s crypto profits inappropriate, while 32% said they were appropriate and 5% did not answer. About 30% of Republicans agreed the profits were inappropriate, compared with large majorities of Democrats.
The poll also found broader concern about the relationship between Trump’s private businesses and presidential decisions. Sixty-nine percent said they believe his business interests influence his actions as president, including half of Republican respondents.
Trump’s family earned more than $1.4 billion from cryptocurrency ventures last year, including World Liberty Financial and the Trump-branded meme coin, according to Reuters. Trump has publicly promoted cryptocurrency while his administration has pursued industry-friendly regulatory policies.
Trump says he has no day-to-day involvement in the family businesses and that his investments are independently managed. The White House denies any conflict of interest.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll surveyed 1,166 U.S. adults online from Aug. 14-17 and has a 3-percentage-point margin of error for the overall sample.
