Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump said Saturday that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is dead following joint U.S. and Israeli military strikes on Iran, though official confirmation from Tehran has not been released.
“Khamenei, one of the most evil people in History, is dead,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, about an hour after multiple media outlets reported that U.S. and Israeli officials believed he had been killed in an Israeli strike. In a separate interview with NBC News, Trump said, “we feel that is a correct story.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also suggested the Iranian leader had been killed, saying there were “growing signs that the tyrant is no longer alive.” The Israeli government has not formally confirmed the death.
Trump described the strikes as part of a broader effort to eliminate threats from Iran and urged the Iranian people to seek change. “This is the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their Country,” he wrote, adding that bombing operations would continue “as long as necessary.”
Khamenei has led Iran since 1989 and oversees the country’s military and judiciary. It remains unclear who would succeed him if the reports are confirmed.
