Karachi, Pakistan / Baghdad, Iraq — At least nine people were killed in Pakistan after protests erupted over reports that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in joint U.S. and Israeli strikes, according to Reuters.
In Karachi, demonstrators breached the outer wall of the U.S. Consulate, set a vehicle on fire, and clashed with police. Authorities said nine protesters were killed, though the circumstances of the deaths remain unclear. A diplomat inside the compound told Reuters, “We’re safe.” Video footage showed crowds chanting “Death to Israel, death to America” before security forces fired tear gas.
Protests also spread to other parts of Pakistan. In Skardu, demonstrators burned a United Nations office building, though local officials reported no casualties there. In Lahore and Islamabad, police blocked roads leading to diplomatic zones and dispersed crowds with limited force.
In Baghdad, Iraqi police used tear gas and stun grenades to scatter hundreds of pro-Iranian protesters near the Green Zone, where the U.S. Embassy is located. No fatalities were immediately reported in Iraq.
Western diplomatic missions in Pakistan increased security protocols, and multinational companies reviewed travel and safety measures as regional tensions intensified.
