NEW YORK, NY — Newly released Justice Department documents indicate a federal corrections officer reported “suspicious” document shredding at the Metropolitan Correctional Center days after Jeffrey Epstein’s death in 2019.

According to the report, the officer contacted the FBI on Aug. 16, saying they had “never seen this amount of bags of shredded documents” being discarded. The officer described the activity as unusual, noting it occurred while multiple federal entities were investigating Epstein’s death. Another officer later reported seeing an inmate disposing of “bales” of shredded material, allegedly stating that Bureau of Prisons officials were “shredding everything.”

Officials connected to the case denied knowledge of any improper destruction of documents. One staff member identified in connection with trash removal said he had “no idea” what was shredded, while the two guards on duty the night Epstein died also denied destroying records.

The developments add to longstanding scrutiny surrounding Epstein’s death, which was ruled a suicide but has continued to draw public and congressional attention. Lawmakers are now considering further testimony as additional details emerge.
