New York, NY — The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency meeting Saturday afternoon following joint U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory actions across the Middle East.

French President Emmanuel Macron called for the session, warning of “grave consequences for international peace and security” if the conflict continues to escalate. “The ongoing escalation is dangerous for all. It must stop,” Macron wrote on X, urging Iran to engage in negotiations over its nuclear and ballistic programs.

President Donald Trump announced earlier that the United States and Israel launched what he described as a “major combat mission” targeting Iranian threats. In a video message posted to Truth Social, Trump said the operation aimed to “defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime.”

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the escalation, stating that the use of force by the United States and Israel, followed by Iran’s retaliation, undermines international peace and security. He encouraged continued diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also announced a special security meeting within the European Union. The Security Council session is scheduled for 4 p.m. EST and is currently presided over by British Ambassador Barbara Woodward.
