Manama, Bahrain — The U.S. State Department has directed Americans in parts of the Middle East to shelter in place following U.S. military strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory attacks across the region.

The U.S. Embassy in Manama issued a security alert warning of an “imminent drone/missile attack” near the headquarters of the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet. Videos circulating online show explosions and smoke near Naval Support Activity Bahrain, though there has been no official confirmation of U.S. casualties or damage to mission-critical facilities.

In Israel, air raid sirens sounded in central population centers as the Israeli Defense Forces reported a “barrage of missiles” launched from Iran. The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem ordered personnel and their families to shelter in place, and Israeli authorities closed civilian airspace, canceling flights at Ben Gurion Airport.

President Donald Trump said the United States initiated “major combat operations” to eliminate what he described as imminent threats from Iran. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed strikes on regional targets, including Bahrain.

Missile interceptions were reported in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, where Al Udeid Air Base is located. Saudi Arabia condemned what it called Iranian aggression and expressed readiness to support regional partners.

There are no confirmed casualty totals as regional governments continue assessing damage.
