Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump announced that the United States will begin escorting stranded commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday, as tensions with Iran continue to disrupt global shipping routes.
Trump described the effort, referred to as “Project Freedom,” as a humanitarian mission aimed at assisting vessels and crews affected by the ongoing blockade. The operation will involve U.S. Navy destroyers, more than 100 aircraft, and approximately 15,000 service members, according to officials.
The Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor, has been largely inaccessible since late February, leaving hundreds of ships stranded and thousands of crew members facing shortages of food and essential supplies. The administration said the mission is intended to safely guide neutral vessels out of the region.
Trump warned that any interference with the operation would be met with force, signaling the potential for further escalation. Iranian officials have maintained their position, stating they will not relinquish control over the strategic waterway.
The development comes as the U.S. reviews a proposed framework from Iran aimed at easing tensions, though officials have indicated significant disagreements remain. Analysts say the situation could have continued impacts on global energy markets and regional stability.
