Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump intensified his public feud with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries this week, accusing the New York Democrat of “inciting violence” following comments Jeffries made criticizing the administration and recent Supreme Court decisions.
In a Truth Social post Wednesday, Trump called Jeffries a “lunatic” and claimed the Democratic leader should face charges over remarks referencing “maximum warfare” against Trump politically. Trump attached an image of Jeffries alongside the phrase, which Democrats described as political rhetoric rather than a literal threat.
The latest comments follow several recent Trump posts attacking Jeffries personally, including calling him a “thug” and questioning whether the congressman should face impeachment after criticizing the Supreme Court’s recent ruling weakening parts of the Voting Rights Act. Jeffries argued the ruling undermined protections for minority communities and called the decision “illegitimate.”
Jeffries responded on social media by accusing Trump of suffering from “Jeffries Derangement Syndrome.” The escalating confrontation comes as Democrats increasingly rally around Jeffries ahead of the 2026 midterms, where the party hopes to regain control of the House of Representatives.
If Democrats win back the House, Jeffries would become the nation’s first Black House speaker. While some Democrats have pushed for a more confrontational stance against Trump, Jeffries has so far downplayed calls for impeachment proceedings against the president.
