Harrisburg, Pennsylvania — Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro publicly urged Sen. John Fetterman to remain committed to the Democratic Party as speculation grows over whether the senator could eventually switch parties amid increasing cooperation with Republicans and support for parts of President Donald Trump’s agenda.
Shapiro said Fetterman should “honor” the will of Pennsylvania voters who elected him as a Democrat, emphasizing that voters expected him to represent Democratic priorities in the U.S. Senate. The comments come after months of growing tensions between Fetterman and members of his own party over several high-profile votes and public statements.
According to voting analyses, Fetterman sided with Republicans roughly 26% of the time during 2025, including support for Trump’s nominee for Homeland Security secretary. His willingness to break with Democratic leadership has drawn criticism from prominent Pennsylvania Democrats and progressive activists.
Democratic National Committee vice chair Malcolm Kenyatta recently criticized Fetterman publicly, calling the senator “a mess” and pointing to strained relationships with Democratic officials, including Shapiro. Meanwhile, some Republican figures, including Trump allies, have reportedly explored whether Fetterman could be persuaded to switch parties.
Despite the speculation, Fetterman said in a recent interview that he remains a Democrat and has no plans to join the Republican Party. The political dispute highlights growing divisions within the Democratic coalition ahead of the 2026 elections.
