Los Angeles, California — The Department of Justice announced Wednesday that it found the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine illegally used race in admissions decisions, accusing the university of discriminating against White and Asian American applicants in violation of federal law.
The investigation was conducted under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and follows the Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling limiting the use of race in college admissions. According to the Justice Department, UCLA continued to consider race in admissions decisions despite the court’s decision in the Harvard affirmative action case.
Federal officials cited admissions data from 2023 and 2024 showing differences in average GPA and standardized test scores among admitted students. The department said admitted Black and Hispanic applicants, on average, had lower academic metrics than White and Asian American students who were accepted during the same admissions cycles.
The Justice Department said it is seeking a voluntary resolution with UCLA but warned the university could face legal action or potential loss of federal funding if changes are not made. The Trump administration has expanded investigations into admissions policies at multiple universities, including Stanford University, Ohio State University, and the University of California, San Diego.
A UCLA spokesperson disputed the findings, stating the school’s admissions process remains merit-based and relies on a comprehensive review of applicants beyond academic statistics alone.
