WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Eric Swalwell announced Monday that he will resign from Congress as he faces multiple allegations of sexual misconduct.
In a public statement, Swalwell said he plans to step down to avoid distracting from his duties, while continuing to deny the most serious accusations. “I will fight the serious, false allegations,” he said, while also acknowledging “mistakes in judgment.”
The resignation follows reports from several outlets detailing accusations from multiple women, including claims of sexual assault and inappropriate behavior. Swalwell has denied the allegations, maintaining they are untrue.
The move comes after he suspended his campaign for California governor and lost support from political allies. Lawmakers from both parties had called for his resignation, and a House vote to expel him was reportedly under consideration.
The bipartisan House Ethics Committee had opened an investigation, though his resignation is expected to end that inquiry, which applies only to current members of Congress.
Separately, prosecutors in New York have confirmed they are reviewing the allegations as part of an ongoing investigation.
Swalwell said he will coordinate with his staff to ensure continuity of services for constituents as he prepares to leave office.
