SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Rep. Eric Swalwell has suspended his campaign for California governor following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct that surfaced just days earlier.

Swalwell announced the decision on social media, apologizing for “mistakes in judgment” while maintaining that the accusations are false. He said he plans to fight the allegations personally rather than continue his campaign.

Reports from major outlets, including the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN, detailed accusations from multiple women, including claims of sexual assault. Swalwell has denied all allegations, stating, “They are absolutely false. They did not happen.”

The fallout was swift. Prominent Democrats, including Nancy Pelosi, called for a full investigation and urged him to step aside. Campaign co-chairs and key supporters withdrew backing, while major organizations, including labor and medical groups, rescinded endorsements.

Additional scrutiny has emerged, including a reported federal inquiry related to separate allegations involving employment practices.

The development reshapes the Democratic primary, with analysts suggesting the race is now wide open ahead of the June election. Meanwhile, Swalwell also faces growing bipartisan calls to resign from Congress, with some lawmakers signaling potential efforts to remove him if he does not step down voluntarily.
