London, United Kingdom – U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer resigned Monday after mounting pressure inside the Labour Party, setting up a leadership contest less than two years after Labour’s 2024 election victory.
Starmer said he would remain as caretaker prime minister until a successor is chosen. He said Labour lawmakers had concluded he was no longer the best person to lead the party into the next general election and that he accepted their judgment.
The resignation followed weeks of turmoil after Labour suffered major losses in May local elections, including setbacks in Wales, Scotland, and English councils. Starmer’s government also faced criticism over policy reversals, economic pressure, and the handling of Peter Mandelson’s appointment as U.K. ambassador to the United States.
Andy Burnham, the former Greater Manchester mayor who recently returned to Parliament, is widely viewed as the leading contender to replace Starmer. AP reported that Burnham has confirmed his leadership bid, while The Guardian reported that Wes Streeting backed him rather than launching his own campaign.
The next Labour leader would become Britain’s seventh prime minister in about a decade. The U.K. is not required to hold another general election until 2029.
